What is Taking Control?

How it all began:

The project began  at the 2007 NPSA AGM.  At that time the decision was made to do two things:
First we were going to organise a conference and second we were going to try to bring other groups/organisations on board.

Other groups did come on board and the conference, which was given the name Taking Control, was held on October 18, 2008 in the Clarion Hotel.  (we would like to thank the manager and staff for the huge assistance they gave and particularly for providing the venue free of charge).

The committee has stayed together and now consists of people from Autism LifeCare Trust, Down Syndrome Ireland, Inclusion Ireland, National Parents & Siblings Alliance, NIID – Trinity College, Partners for Change, Sisters of Charity of Jesus & Mary/Muiriosa Foundation, Microboard Association of Ireland, Walkinstown Association, 22q11 and other interested people.

It is our Belief:

We are united in so far as we believe in an inclusive world and that people with intellectual disability and autism, with the appropriate supports, have:

  • A right to a good life
  • A right to have their personhood recognised.
  • A right to choose their supports and services including accommodation.
  • The ability to make such choices given appropriate support
  • A right to be empowered to make these choices
